Phoenix Central Park (with John Wardle Architects) wins at 2020 AIA National Awards
9
November 2020
Phoenix Central Park has won the Harry Seidler Award for Commercial Architecture and the Emil Sodersten Award for Interior Architecture at the 2020 AIA National Awards.
Interior Architecture jury:
"Here, two architectural practices have collaborated, at a conscious but also an instinctive level, to produce one masterwork. An inspired partnership is evident in the architecture – one based on friendship and driven by mutual critique in place of a prescriptive brief. The project is both ambitious and free-spirited, representing an unprecedented moment in architectural patronage.
Although it can only be guessed at from the street, beyond the facade that fronts Central Park’s Chippendale Green is a wondrous interior that is defined by a controlled and unexpected shifting of sunlight directed into the building from selected parts of the exterior. Inside, two architecturally crafted envelopes hug the central courtyard. Multiple paths take you through the building, establishing rich spatial sequences and pausing at points to invite engagement with the city outside.
The ground plane and its relationship to the street are subordinate to the diverse interior spaces and dynamics of their sequencing. Each space stuns, but the connections between them are equally inventive and inspiring. There are no advancing and recessive spaces, but, rather, one united passage of varying generosity.
The performing and visual arts areas, located on either side of the ground floor courtyard, are fully technically equipped. However, each space’s use is not defined in an orthodox way; spatial definition of function is now irrelevant. As one of a growing number of architectural collaborations being realized, Phoenix Central Park is a masterwork. In this project, the overall composition is seamlessly melded, to the point where it is difficult to decipher where one design hand ends and the other begins."

Phoenix Central Park (with John Wardle Architects) wins highest honour at 2020 NSW Architecture Awards
6
July 2020
Phoenix Central Park (with John Wardle Architects) was the most recognised project at the 2020 NSW Architecture Awards, taking out the NSW Architecture Medallion, Sir Arthur G. Stephenson Award for Commercial Architecture and John Verge Award for Interior Architecture
Peter Poulet, chair of juries for this year’s NSW Architecture Awards, says Phoenix Central Park is an outstanding project showing the best of collaborative outcomes and is also recognised for its strong use of material and form.
“Having been given an open invitation to design something exceptional, the architects have joined forces to seamlessly intersect design with the visual and performing arts. The single yet multifaceted and dynamic project creates an immersive experience for those inside while being a striking architectural marker on the outside,” says Poulet.

AIA NSW Wilkinson Award
12
August 2017
Tamarama House won the 2017 AIA NSW Wilkinson Award under the Residential Architecture - Houses (New) category.
The judge's citation:
As you walk through the Tamarama House your eye is continually drawn to remarkable details: of animated handrails, folded steel and carved concrete. However, it is the purposeful and sequential manipulation of volumes — from the compressed entry portico to the vast living space, layered cabana and intimate master bedroom — that leaves a lasting impression of delight. This is a timeless and extraordinary piece of architectural craftsmanship where the hand of the architect is ever present. The overlapping geometries of the form and dual garden arrangement of the plan masterfully respond to the particularities of the site. Central to this gesture is the sunken front garden facing the street. Sheltered from wild weather, it acts as both a place of repose and respite, and a balanced juxtaposition to the expanse of ocean adjacent. Views are carefully framed, reflected and enclosed throughout the house, capturing moments to dwell on sky or surf.
Whilst the budget was significant, this was managed with remarkable acumen, the elegant palette of materials conveying at once a sense of casualness and grandeur. Viewed from both the street and the ever—popular coastal walkway, the beautifully sculptural form of Tamarama House is offset by the layered textures of a highly integrated garden that anchors the house within its coastal setting.
